A Dramatic Home Improvement - replacing a tired, inefficient conservatory with a bright, eco-friendly home extension

Our client lives in a unique old cottage that has beautiful style and character. A style that was marred by the dilapidated conservatory that was tucked away at the back of a reception room.Used for years as nothing more than a store-place, and the outside door having been redundant, our client was keen to transform this corner of the house into an attractive and much enjoyed part of her home.

The cottage lies in a conservation area and after investigation it was clear that planning permission would be needed before work could start. After conversations and site meetings, a design was created that provides a fabulous room that has a spacious and practical feel from the inside, whilst being sympathetic to the garden setting on the outside. Previous extensions had produced a mixture of finishes on the house and a larch cladding was chosen that would provide a subtle contrast and also tie in with other garden structures. A dilapidated car port was also to be replaced and was integrated into the design to provide a valuable flow.

Some of the key features of this project are:

  • An existing opening was effectively sealed off to keep the main house secure and weather-tight during the installation.
  • Existing structures were removed and disposed of and then footings laid with Building regulation approval.
  • All the main elements of the building were already pre-prepared in factory conditions so that the structure was erected in a single day.
  • Aluminium windows and matching skylight were installed.
  • A living sedum roof was laid to help insulation and also look fantastic.
  • The whole interior was plastered and decorated to the client’s choices, plus flooring laid and thoroughly cleaned.
  • Externally the cladding was completed, car port finished and the site cleared and tidied.
  • A great job covered by our 10 year insurance backed warranty.

Martin was always very good at keeping in contact and ensuring that other people did not let me down. The team of builders did their best to keep the house and garden tidy and clean during the work and the quality of the work done was good. We've had lots of positive comments and we would definitely recommend you to others I've been receiving lots of compliments from people walking past the house, particularly about the roof. I'm getting accustomed to sitting in the garden and having people shout over the fence 'I like your roof!' So I think the aim of designing a garden room which enhances our period cottage has definitely been achieved.
